Bellator MMA has announced that a match between Paul Daley and Rory MacDonald will headline Bellator 179, a May 19th card at the SSE Arena in London, England. This announcement comes after much speculation of a match between Daley and Michael ‘Venom’ Page surfaced earlier this week. Page did plenty to fuel these suspicions as he antagonized Daley on social media continuously to sign a bout agreement.
Daley’s main event opponent, however, will go to MacDonald, who Daley called out after a highlight reel, flying knee KO of Brennan Ward at Bellator 172.
This will be MacDonald’s first fight under the Bellator banner since coming over from the UFC, despite being signed with them since August of 2016. Part of his agreement with the company at signing was that he would need significant time off to heal multiple nose breaks endured during his last two UFC fights against Robbie Lawler and Stephen Thompson.
The matchup between these two is very appealing. Daley (39-14-2) likes to come forward and is known to headhunt. His power has the ability to KO anyone in the 170lb. division.
Rory MacDonald (18-4) is a very methodical and well rounded fighter. He will most likely try to stay on the outside and counter Daley. MacDonald has a very underrated Jiu Jitsu game as well, which he might be able to employ if he can get Daley down to the mat.
So far, the London Bellator 179 card does not have any additional bouts listed.
