Bellator taking Sonnen vs. Silva grudge match to PPV

A grudge match featuring two MMA legends that has been years in the making is coming to Madison Square Garden.

The Associated Press revealed earlier today that Chael Sonnen (29-15-1) will fight PRIDE legend Wanderlei Silva (35-12-1) when Bellator returns to PPV on June 24th.

Bellator 180 ‘Sonnen vs. Silva’ will mark the first time the promotion has touched down in New York since MMA was legalized in the state nearly a year ago and the first time Bellator has tried their hand in the PPV market since King Mo fought Rampage Jackson back in May of 2014.

Silva and Sonnen were scheduled to fight under the UFC banner at UFC 173 (then the TUF Brazil 3 Finale, then UFC 175) but due to a failed Sonnen drug test the fight would be scrapped. Now, years later, with both men long gone from the UFC, Bellator CEO Scott Coker wants to sell fans a fight that he believes can make their promotion a PPV player.

No other fights have been announced for this card but you can expect to see former UFC turned Bellator stars Lorenz Larkin and Ryan Bader to make their debuts at this event.
