So, that was a BIG shock to the system, Mehrdad Janzemini, who is renowned for his first round finishing ability, was knocked out by Stefano Paterno, in the first round to claim the vacant Cage Warriors welterweight title.
After the fight went to the ground early, Paterno took full advantage, and KO’d his opponent with some heavy ground and pound.
Janzemini has now dropped substantially down the pecking order in a stacked welterweight division and his teammate and fellow welterweight fighter Nathan Jones will have suffered the same fate.
Jones is now on a four fight losing streak after losing to Ross Houston in the second round, as Houston took advantage and locked in a RNC following a poor Jones takedown attempt.
Speaking to the press after his fight, Houston made it clear that the only fight he wants now is a title fight, but with this win coming against a fighter on a three fight skid, a title eliminator fight seems more likely.
Ed Arthur and Mike Ekundayo were hotly tipped to have the fight of the night in their bantamweight clash, but “Airlines” controlled the fight from start to finish.
Ekundayo kept Arthur pinned to either the cage or the floor for the whole three rounds and a win never looked I doubt, the question is now, what’s next for this promising upstart?
Hometown boy Brad Wheeler picked up his 11th submission win against Orlando D’Ambrosio in the second round.
Wheeler is now one of a few welterweight fighters with a legitimate claim for a title shot, my prediction however, is that he will face Ross Houston in a title eliminator fight before the end of the year to decide who gets a crack at Paterno.
In the main card opener, Welshman Mason Jones fought to a decision victory over Konmon Deh, in a fight which saw Jones lock in multiple submissions, but Deh slipped out of each one.
Jones also targeted Deh’s legs too, with some nasty looking oblique kicks, similar to those of Jon Jones, which looked like they did legitimate damage with Deh limping a bit after receiving one of them.
Jones has now expressed an interest in fighting Alexander Jacobson at Cage Warriors 97 at the end of September.
Cage Warriors returns for Cage Warriors 96 in Liverpool, as Scouser Paddy “The Baddy” Pimblett takes on “The Viking” Soren Bak for the vacant lightweight title.
