Chael Sonnen officially retires from the sport of MMA

“Right now guys, I do want to take an opportunity to officially announce my retirement form mixed martial arts.” – Chael Sonnen (6.11.14)

rp_chael-300x200.jpgAfter being pulled from next months UFC 175 due to a failed random drug test, Sonnen has decided that he wants to stay within the rules, but doesn’t quite understand them. He went on to say that he will be putting his health and his family first from here out, and he also gave a heartfelt thank you to his all-time number one dance partner – Anderson Silva.

Sonnen retires with a professional mixed martial arts record of 28-14-1. He holds noteable wins over the likes of Jason ‘Mayhem’ Miller, Paulo Filho, Yushin Okami, Nate Marquardt, Brian Stann, Michael Bisping, and Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua. Sonnen went 5-5 during his UFC stint having earned 3 title shots in two different weight classes.

Chael will of course be remembered for his work on the mic and his ability to stir the pot with Brazil, their fighters, and their fans. Chael made things right with Brazil during his recent coaching stint on TUF Brazil 3. He won over plenty of Brazilian fans and even turned some against the great Wanderlei Silva.

From here on out you can count on seeing even more of Chael now that he’s retired from competition. Chael will continue to host UFC Tonight on FOX Sports 1 alongside Kenny Florian, and has even been rumored to take Dana White’s spot as the President of the promotion when Dana hangs up his suit.
