It appeared that Cub Swanson had earned himself a shot at the winner of Jose Aldo-Chad Mendes II for UFC gold after his unanimous decision victory that earned him his seventh Zuffa bonus. Unfortunately for Swanson, the Aldo-Mendes rematch would be pushed back a couple of months which would force him to wait until 2015 for his title shot, and as we’ve witnessed more than a dozen times – waiting in the UFC is usually never a good idea.
Instead, Swanson will take on former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar in what should be a true #1 contenders battle for the championship Aldo has held since 2009, before they even introduced featherweights into the UFC. Ariel Helwani joined the UFC Tonight crew via satellite earlier in the evening to reveal that both men have agreed to the fight.
According to Helwani, both Edgar and Swanson are interested in exchanging pleasantries in either November or December. Helwani went on to say that the UFC is looking to make this fight their headliner when the promotion returns to Stockholm, Sweden on October 4th. We’ll keep you abreast of this situation as it continues to unfold.
