International Fight Week in Las Vegas during Fourth of July weekend has become kind of a big deal since its inception, and it’s always delivered in terms of big time fights. It all began back in 2012 at UFC 148 when we witnessed what was, at the time, dubbed the biggest rematch in UFC history – Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen II. The following year we would see Chris Weidman deliver the most shocking KO in UFC history when he ended Silva’s 6-year title reign. This year it’ll be Weidman again when he makes the 2nd defense of that middleweight title he took away from Silva against former light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida. Oh yeah, as of today it appears we’ll be getting a double helping of title fight at UFC 175.
Ronda Rousey vs Alexis Davis Saturday, July 5th for the women’s bantamweight title in Las Vegas for International Fight Week!!!
— Dana White (@danawhite) April 12, 2014
Davis and Rousey both competed in Vegas at UFC 171 in February. Rousey made quick work of the previously undefeated Sara McMann after landing a knee to the body that would render her fellow Olympian unable to continue. Davis’ hand would be raised after a hard-fought split decision victory over top ranked Ohioan Jessica Eye. It would be her fifth straight victory over highly respected competition under the UFC and Invicta banners.
This fight will see Rousey attempting to make her fifth consecutive successful title defense. Her major motion picture debut will take place just one month later when Expendables 3 is released nationwide on August 15th.
As of today, the UFC 175 fight card looks a little something like this (there will likely be some shifting before July 5th):
• Middleweight Title Bout: Chris Weidman (C) (11-0) vs. Lyoto Machida (21-4)
• Women’s Bantamweight Title Bout: Ronda Rousey (C) (9-0) vs. Alexis Davis (16-5)
• Light Heavyweight Bout: Daniel Cormier (14-0) vs. Dan Henderson (30-11)
• Light Heavyweight Bout: Chael Sonnen (28-14-1) vs. Wanderlei Silva (35-12-1)
• Middleweight Bout: Uriah Hall (8-4) vs. Thiago Santos (9-2)
