Apparently the UFC isn’t interested in Daniel Cormier being sad. Instead of moving the Daniel Cormier versus Rashad Evans contest to UFC 174 in Baltimore this April as reported earlier today, Cormier will now remain in the co-main where he will face a relatively green fighter in terms of Pro MMA, Patrick Cummins.
In terms of interest, there is a back story between Cormier and Cummins. This fight does make sense. Cummins and Cormier trained together back in their wrestling days, but as Cummins explained on Twitter, they are friends – not brothers.
Stepping up to take this fight on nine days notice make it a no lose situation for Cummins. If he wins he’d be the first man to defeat a man just one win away from a title shot in Cormier. If he loses then he’s likely to stay on the UFC roster and after fighting Cormier everyone will know his name.
Think Cummins is ready to just collect his check and become just another hit on Cormier’s impressive victims list? Think again. Cummins actually claims that he used to make Cormier cry in training. Widely respected MMA writer Damon Martin even wrote about Cummins having the potential to be the next Jon Jones in an article last year. Is it possible that UFC 170 has gotten even more interesting with the Penn State alum stepping in for the injured Rashad Evans? I guess it depends on what kind of stories you’re into. This one could very well be of the Rocky Balboa variety.
