UFC 220: Cormier to defend UFC Light Heavyweight title in Boston against Volkan

Recently reinstated 2-time defending UFC Light Heavyweight Champion, Daniel Cormier (19-1), will return to action for the first time since being knocked out by Jon Jones this past summer at UFC 214. He’ll attempt to make his third consecutive successful title defense when he takes on Swiss KO machine, Volkan Oezdemir (15-1) in the main event of UFC 220 on January 20th in Boston.

With the outcome of Cormier’s rematch with Jones being overturned due to the troubled former champion testing positive for a banned substance, the belt was given back to its rightful owner who now resumes his reign as a defending champion that will surpass 1,000 days (he’ll join Tito Ortiz and Jones as the only 205 lb’er to do so) should he defeat Oezdemir at UFC 220.

With 5 career KO’s, including his most recent ones over Jimi Manuwa and Misha Cirkunov, clocking in at under a minute, Oezedemir — who is simply being billed as ‘Volkan’ for this fight — poses that quick one punch KO threat that Cormier is very familiar with having dealt with Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson in two world title fights. This will be Volkan’s first headlining stint as a UFC fighter and his second opportunity to perform on a UFC PPV.
