With the event now just two months away, the UFC has dropped the official event poster for UFC 232 ‘Jones vs. Gustafsson 2’. The event will close out the promotions 2018 PPV campaign and will boast two major title bouts.
The headlining bout will feature a rematch of what many MMA pundits will tell you was the greatest mixed martial arts title bout of all-time. I’d be hard pressed to disagree.
In a rematch of their UFC 165 that took place inside of the building formerly known as the Air Canada Centre in lovely Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Alexander Gustafsson will look to capture UFC gold for the very first time when he faces a returning Jon Jones. Jones was able to edge Gustafsson out via a close unanimous decision the first time around in what would be his 6th consecutive title defense at the time. His streak would end at 8 when he was stripped of the title due to a violation of the UFC’s code of conduct policy.
For Gustafsson, it’s been a rocky road since his first fight with Jones. The Swedish “Mauler” has posted a record of 3-2 with his two losses coming when the most was on the line.
After finishing Jimi Manuwa via KO in London, Gus got right back into the thick of things earning himself a title eliminator bout against Anthony Johnson on home soil in Stockholm. However, he’d only last a little under half a round before being TKO’d by ‘Rumble’. Despite the KO loss, Gustafsson would get a title shot for his next bout against Daniel Cormier. The bout would go the distance with Cormier being awarded a very close split decision victory, making Gus 0-2 in title bouts under the UFC banner.
In the co-main event of the evening, mixed martial arts legend Cris ‘Cyborg’ Justino will to add to her 21-fight unbeaten streak when she takes on UFC bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes in what could be her toughest bout to date. Cyborg’s featherweight title will be on the line meaning Nunes, should she emerge victorious, could make history by becoming the first ever 2-division women’s champ in UFC history.
All in all, the card will feature five world champions, current and former, including UFC Hall of Famer BJ Penn and former heavyweight kingpin Andrei Arlovski. A highly intriguing matchup between the ‘Fire Kid’ out of France, Tom Duquesnoy, and former Cage Warriors bantamweight champ, Nathaniel Wood, sticks out on this loaded card right alongside match ups between welterweight vets Carlos Condit and Michael Chiesa, 205 lb’ers Ilir Latifi and Corey Anderson and what could go down as a title eliminator between Cat Zingano and Megan Anderson inside of the women’s 145 lbs division.
Check out the fully updated card as it stands tonight for the December 29th card below.
