With UFC Glasgow now officially in the books, it’s time to turn our focus to Long Island where a former champion and hometown hero will be looking to get off the schneid against a former TUF winner who is looking to make a name for himself in his new weight class.
Former 3-time defending middleweight champion Chris Weidman (13-3) is another example of how quickly a fighter can fall after losing a world title. Weidman will enter the Octagon with a 3-fight losing streak and the pressure of performing in front of a hometown crowd. His opponent, Kelvin Gastelum (13-2) is coming off a dominant victory over Vitor Belfort which also took place on enemy soil. Unfortunately for Gastelum, that win would be overturned due to a positive marijuana test.
A win for Weidman gets the former champion right back into the mix at 185 lbs while a win for Gastelum would catapult a fighter who simply could not make weight at 170 lbs back into title contention, but this time it’d be in his natural weight class.
A featherweight slugfest between Dennis Bermudez (16-6) and Darren Elkins (22-5) that is sure to get the Islander faithful going will co-headline the event. A light heavyweight duel between retired barista Patrick Cummins (9-4) and Gian Villante (15-8), Weidman’s close friend and training partner, and a bantamweight battle with heavy implications between Jimmie Rivera (20-1) and Thomas Almeida (22-1) rounds out the main card.
UFC on FOX 25 ‘Weidman vs. Gastelum’ goes down on July 22nd live from Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum beginning at 6 p.m. ET on FOX. The early prelims begin at 4 p.m. on UFC Fight Pass. You can check out the full episode of UFC Road to the Octagon ‘Weidman vs. Gastelum’ below.
