A women’s 125 lbs division will debut later this year on the 26th season of the UFC reality series The Ultimate Fighter. Tryouts for women interested in competing for the opportunity to be crowned as the first ever UFC women’s flyweight champion will take place on May 23rd at Palace Station and Casino in Las Vegas. You can find all of the necessary information here.
The last time the UFC introduced a new division on TUF was back in 2014 when the women’s strawweight division exploded onto the scene. Team Pettis’ Carla Esparza and Team Melendez’s Rose Namajunas were the last two of the sixteen competitors standing after the twelve episode season came to a close. Esparza would end up defeating Namajunas at the TUF 20 Finale to become the inaugural UFC women’s strawweight champion. She’d go on to drop the title to Polish sensation Joanna Jedrzejczyk in her first title defense at UFC 185 the following March.
The 125 lbs women’s division will be the fourth women’s division to be added to the Ultimate Fighting Championship. While the bantamweight and strawweight divisions are currently fully functional, the women’s featherweight division currently consists of two fighters.
