Austin Aries released from WWE

After just over a year and half with WWE, Austin Aries has been let go by World Wrestling Entertainment.

Wrestling Observer has since confirmed that Aries asked for a released from the promotion before his wish was granted earlier today. The former 2-time ROH World Champ appears to be elated by the news as evidenced by his reaction on social media following his release.

Aries began his WWE career on the NXT roster where he would end up suffering a nasty orbital injury in a match with Shinsuke Nakamura. After doing a fantastic job as a commentator on RAW, 205 Live and Main Event, Aries would compete on the purple brand upon his return from injury in an extended title feud with Neville. Aries would lose to Neville at WrestleMania 33, Payback and Extreme Rules, which would be Aries’ final televised match with WWE.

Aries’ fiancee, Thea Trinidad, recently signed with WWE on June 27th and will also play former Divas Champion AJ Lee in the upcoming Paige film, Fighting With My Family, for WWE Studios and Film4.
