Chad Mendes becomes the latest fighter to fall victim to USADA

2-time UFC featherweight title challenger Chad Mendes is the latest fighter to be busted by USADA. Here’s the full statement that was released by the UFC just moments ago:

“The UFC organization was notified today that the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) has informed Chad Mendes of a potential Anti-Doping Policy violation stemming from an out-of-competition sample collection.

USADA, the independent administrator of the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, will handle the results management and appropriate adjudication of this case. It is important to note that, under the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, there is a full and fair review process that is afforded to all athletes before any sanctions are imposed. Additional information will be provided at the appropriate time as the process moves forward.”

Mendes has dropped 3 of his last 4 fights since winning 5 in row to earn a second title shot against then champion Jose Aldo back at UFC 179. After losing to Aldo for a second time in what many named the 2014 Fight of the Year, Mendes got back on track with a first round TKO victory over Ricardo Lamas in his first of three bouts during 2015. After that, it was all downhill for Mendes. Although his pocket book may have won big by taking a short notice interim title bout against Conor McGregor at UFC 189, his jaw did not. Mendes would suffer back to back KO/TKO victories to McGregor and Frankie Edgar over a 5 month period to close out his 2015 campaign. This negative drug test may be a very delayed version of icing on the proverbial cake for the Team Alpha Male standout.

We’ll keep an eye out for Mendes’ statement on this situation.
