Was CM Punk supposed to sign with the UFC?

punk-ufcRemember that big announcement teased by the UFC ahead of their ‘The Time Is Now’ presser? It wasn’t that Matt Brown was going to fight Tarec Saffiedine on Valentine’s Day in Colorado next year.  Sure, it’s a great fight, but that wasn’t your “major announcement.”

Were we expecting that apparel deal with Adidas or Under Armour to get done? Sure. Ronda Rousey doing a reality show on E! with a colorful supporting cast? It seemed reasonable. Maybe it was even going to be Brock Lesnar coming back to fight Fedor in Jerry’s house. Well, we know that’s never going to happen. Either way, like always, we just brushed it off and figured it would be announced somewhere down the line.

According to the always reliable @FrontRowBrian, former WWE, ECW and ROH world champion CM Punk was supposed to sign with the promotion. The details of the deal aren’t exactly clear at the moment but where there is smoke you can always expect some fire to emerge sooner rather than later. After all, the 36-year-old continues to express his active interest in the UFC and is a devoted Gracie jiu-jitsu practitioner.

One thing that still sticks out to us from the aforementioned presser was when UFC President Dana White mentioned  something about the next season of TUF trying something radically different. Whether or not these two stories have any relation to one another remains to be seen. What we really want to know is what you guys think about Punk trying his hand at MMA. What weight class do you see him competing at and how do you think he’d fare? Don’t be afraid to utilize the comments section below.
