Eddie Alvarez vs. Justin Gaethje added to UFC 218 in Detroit

TUF 26 coaches Eddie Alvarez (28-5) and Justin Gaethje (18-0) have been booked for a bout that screams fight of the year contender on paper. The fight will take place on December 2nd inside of the brand new Little Caesars Arena in downtown Detroit. The fight was first announced by

Alvarez, a former UFC and 2-time Bellator lightweight champion, will look to collect his first win since dethroning Rafael dos Anjos last summer for the UFC lightweight title. Alvarez would drop that title later on in the year to Conor McGregor in one of the most high-profile fights in UFC history. Six months later, Alvarez and Dustin Poirier would fight to a no contest after Alvarez hit his opponent with illegal knees after being stunned by Poirier early on in the 2nd round. Although an immediate rematch between the two competitors had been teased, Alvarez would later be booked to coach the 26th season of The Ultimate Fighter opposite the “new hotness” in the 155 lbs division.

After successfully defending his WSOF lightweight championship five times, the UFC would finally do the right thing and sign one of the most exciting lightweights since Eddie Alvarez. Not unlike Alvarez, Justin Gaethje entered the UFC with a lot of hype surrounding him heading into his promotional debut against TUF 12 finalist Michael Johnson. The fight wouldn’t just live up to the hype, it would exceed all expectations.

Gaethje and Johnson would put on an instant classic that would earn Fight of the Night honors for both men and a Performance of the Night bonus for Gaethje. If UFC fans didn’t have Gaethje on their radar before this fight, they’d quickly fall in love with his heart and watching this come from behind ultraviolent classic.

One night after these two coaches watch their students fight for the inaugural UFC women’s flyweight championship inside of the Park Theater in Paradise, Nevada, Alvarez and Gaethje will jockey for position at 155 lbs, a division that is currently ruled by Conor McGregor and will soon crown an interim champion when Tony Ferguson and Kevin Lee meet at UFC 216 next month.
