Gilbert Melendez steps in on short notice to face Al Iaqunita at UFC Fight Night: San Diego

After a controversial split decision loss to Eddie Alvarez this past Saturday night in Mexico City, former Strikeforce champion Gilbert “El Niño” Melendez (22-5) will make a very quick turnaround.

UFC Tonight just announced that Melendez will take on Serra-Longo standout Al Iaquinta (12-3-1) in a fight that will serve as the co-main event for UFC Fight Night 71. Iaquinta was originally slated to face Bobby Green at on July 15th in San Diego; Green was removed from said card earlier today leaving Iaquinta without a dancing partner. Melendez, who is currently riding the first multi-loss streak of his storied career, was more than happy to step in.
