Carano’s UFC debut likely to take place in December against Rousey

After a five-year absence from professional competition, it appears that former Strikeforce standout Gina Carano may return to mixed martial arts during the calendar year.

Carano will meet with the UFC brass next Monday and according to UFC President Dana White, who answered questions about Carano during a scrum in Dublin earlier today, the promotion is confident that they can get a deal done. If White and company are able to get Carano signed she will get an immediate title shot against current UFC bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey in early December. Our calendar tells us that the UFC has a pay-per-view (UFC 181)  scheduled for December 6th in a location TBD.

Die hard fans of the sport, some, not all, are up in arms at the notion of Carano getting a crack at Rousey upon her return. Here’s Dana’s reasoning behind the decision:

“She did a damn good job against Cyborg, and Cyborg was a little jacked up on Mountain Dew in that fight you know what I mean.. And she’s the one who started this whole women’s mma craze, and Ronda wants to fight her. Ronda has done everything that we have asked her to do. This is like a GSP situation, when GSP asked us for Diaz. You know… how would I say no to GSP? Ronda wants this fight bad….Gina wants the fight bad too.”

Dana also explained the mutual respect and admiration these two girls have for one another. “She loves her,” White told media members when asked about how Rousey felt about her potential future opponent. “She said she’s the reason she really got into it [MMA] and she respects her alot.” As far as Carano… “She loves Ronda,” White told reporters. “And she respects her. They both have a lot of respect for each other.”

If this fight does materialize it will be Rousey’s third title defense of the 2013. For Carano, it would be her first fight at 135 lbs since she made her professional mixed martial arts debut in the summer of 2006, a fight she ended via KO just 38 seconds in.
