Highlights and Numbers: VanZant’s battering of Herrig

Published

To kick off the main card festivities in New Jersey last night, Paige VanZant and Felice Herrig engaged in a pivotal war inside of the UFC women’s strawweight division. After all was said and done, the judges scorecards read 30-27, 30-26, and 30-26 in favor of VanZant.

The highlights above and the numbers below show us that VanZant only got better as the fight wore on while Herrig was merely in survival mode to avoid suffering the loss via finish of her career.

VanZant was just as accurate as she was deadly in her 2nd octagon appearance. She was able to increase her striking output from round to round.

In the first round, VanZant landed 45 of her 53 strikes, 21 of 29 being of the significant variety. The 2nd saw her landing 60 out of 74; 16 of 28 sig. strikes. In the final round she landed 94 of 114, 30 out of 35 sig. strikes, as she looked to finish Herrig off. Her third round output was higher than Herrig’s output during the full 15 minutes.

The referee may have allowed this fight to go to the judges, but he easily could have saved Herrig from further damage at any point during the third round. Fights have been stopped from far less. Herrig would be transported to the hospital immediately after the fight.
