UFC President Dana White closed out today’s UFC 25th Anniversary Press Conference with the above video package announcing a lightweight title bout between undefeated champion Khabib Nurmagomedov (26-0) and the biggest star in combat sports today, Conor McGregor (21-3).
While neither man was present at the press conference, the news has been the talk of the mixed martial arts world since its announcement, on the eve of UFC 227. The bout will headline the promotions October 6th event in Las Vegas inside of T-Mobile Arena and will mark McGregor’s return to mixed martial arts after his professional boxing debut against Floyd Mayweather Jr. last summer inside of the same venue.
McGregor, a former 2-divsion champion, will look to recapture the title he won against Eddie Alvarez in November of 2016, when he last appeared inside of the Octagon. For Nurmagomedov, this will be the first defense of the lightweight title he was awarded after defeating Al Iaquinta earlier this year in Brooklyn. The same belt was stripped from McGregor due to inactivity.
