You could say Mickey Gall took the right fight at the right time. Recently, the New Jersey native won his professional debut bout in the first round via a rear naked choke for a promotion named Dead Serious MMA. Pretty cool, but nothing that should garner major headlines for a virtual unknown, right? Wrong.

Gall, and everyone fighting on the card, were well aware of who was in the crowd watching them fight on that November night.

While Gall’s finish may have caught the attention of White, what he said following his victory kept it. “Hey Dana White, I don’t know if CM Punk has an opponent, but I would love to fight that man, CM Punk,” Gall said. That’s all it took.

White would later confirm that with a victory in his UFC debut, Mickey Gall will indeed be fighting CM Punk in what would be his 3rd professional fight. It will be Punk’s first.

“I’m bringing Mickey Gall in and he’s gonna fight a kid called Michael Jackson. They’re gonna fight on the prelims on February 6th on Fight Pass. If he wins that fight, Mickey Gall will fight CM Punk,” White told Michael Landsberg during an interview for TSN’s Off The Record. White would also reveal that Punk will be in the audience watching the fight, a fight that will headline the UFC Fight Pass portion of UFC Fight Night 82 in an effort to continue to urge fans to subscribe to the digital streaming service. For anyone wondering, Jackson will not be awarded a fight with CM Punk if he wins.

So, if all goes according to plan and Gall beats Jackson on February 6th, when will Punk and Gall fight? According to Punk, he believes the smart business move is for it to take place on the landmark UFC 200 card on July 9th. “I’ve spoken to Dana about it, trying to figure it out and what’s best for both parties. It’s just a smarter business decision,” Punk told the Associated Press about making his highly anticipated debut on the biggest card of the year. “I didn’t move up to Milwaukee, I’m not training my ass off and getting hurt, going back into the gym just so I can one-and-done it. This is what I do now,” Punk continued.

While UFC 200 would make the most sense business wise, White currently has other ideas. “The CM Punk fight is probably going to happen in June. UFC 199 is what I’m thinking,” White told Boston’s Toucher and Rich just days ago (via The Washington Post).

Stay tuned right here for all things Punk-Gall as this ongoing story continues to develop in the coming months.
