A lightweight title bout between champion Rafael dos Anjos (25-7) and challenger Eddie Alvarez (27-4) has been scheduled to headline UFC Fight Night 90. The event will take place on Thurdsay July 7th at the MGM Grand Garden Arena and will air exclusively on UFC Fight Pass.

Dos Anjos and Alvarez will headline the first of three cards in three nights for the UFC, kicking off a monster weekend for the promotion which will culminate on July 9th with UFC 200. The TUF 23 finale, featuring a strawweight title bout between champ Joanna Jedrzejczyk and Claudia Gadelha, will take place on Friday night inside of the same venue.

Since capturing the lightweight world title in March of last year with a dominant performance against Anthony Pettis, Dos Anjos has only seen 56 seconds of work. That 56 second absolute obliteration of Donald Cerrone last December in Orlando at UFC on FOX 17 reminded us just how far Dos Anjos has come.

After beginning his UFC career with a record of 4-4, it appeared that Dos Anjos was destined to become a middle of the road gatekeeper type. Since then, RDA has posted a record of 10-1 inside of one of the deepest divisions in the sport with high-profile wins over Nate Diaz, former champ Benson Henderson, Donald Cerrone x 2 and of course the win that earned him a spot in the history books over Anthony Pettis. In Eddie Alvarez, he’ll be facing a man who has accomplished everything. Everything except for UFC gold.

When Eddie Alvarez joined the UFC ranks he did so as the biggest free agent on the market and he joined for two big reasons – to provide a better life for his family and to win a UFC title. The 2-time Bellator lightweight champion had already proved himself against the best of the best outside of the octagon. He also earned himself a reputation for putting on exciting fights, not discriminating between the stand up game and the ground game when it came to finishing things off. Alvarez also became one of the most popular fighters in the world that had never fought for the UFC, earning acclaim from MMA critics all over the world in the form of multiple round of the year and fight of the year honors over the years.

Outside of Rafael dos Anjos, Eddie Alvarez just may be the most well-rounded fighter at 155 lbs right now. Getting to see these two competitors mix it up on a Thursday night will quite the treat for fight fans.
