Ronda Rousey to return to competition on ABC’s ‘Battle of the Network Stars’

Former UFC women’s bantamweight champion and international superstar Ronda Rousey is returning to competition very soon. Just not in a way you may have expected.

It’s been announced that Rousey, 30, will head up a team on ABC’s Battle of the Network Stars reboot. The other squad will be captained by retired Super Bowl Champion DeMarcus Ware.

Battle of the Network Stars was originally a show hosted by mainly Howard Cosell that saw stars from ABC, NBC and CBS compete against one another in various sporting events. This time around, ESPN’s Mike Greenberg and Joe Tessitore will have the honor of sharing hosting duties.

According to Vulture, the reboot will feature different celebs competing over the 10-week lifespan of the program. Executive Producer Andrew Glassman explains that the old ‘Network versus Network’ format will not exactly be in effect on the modern day version of the show.

“The network versus network format didn’t make as much sense as fielding teams based on the characters people love from over the years to the current day: cops vs. TV sitcoms, White House vs. lawyers, TV moms and dads vs. TV kids. It’s like summer camp on steroids with your favorite TV stars.”

As far as Rousey’s UFC career goes, the newly engaged fighter has not revealed any plans to return to the Octagon. Her contract is now up following her devastating loss to Amanda Nunes last December at UFC 207.

Battle of the Network Stars will return to the small screen on June 29th.
