Rory MacDonald gets his title shot, fights Robbie Lawler in a rematch at UFC 189 ‘Aldo vs. McGregor’

It’s been a long time coming. 25-year-old Canadian welterweight Rory MacDonald will finally get his crack at the belt his good friend and training partner Georges St. Pierre, arguably the greatest mixed martial artist of all-time, defended a record 9 times.

UFC President Dana White announced the match up earlier today in the middle of a press conference that addressed the state of PEDs and what the company plans on doing to rid of them.

MacDonald wants to bring that belt back home to TriStar, and he wants to do it in the worst way. On July 11th in Las Vegas, he’ll have to get past Robbie Lawler, the same Robbie Lawler who’s responsible for his last defeat.

Since being beaten by Lawler via split decision at UFC 167, MacDonald has defeated Demian Maia (in an exciting comeback victory), top contender Tyron Woodley, and Tarec Saffiedine; the latter of which was a TKO victory of the performance of the night variety.

Lawler versus MacDonald will serve as the co-main event for the promotions 4th annual international fight week card. A featherweight title bout between current champion Jose Aldo and challenger Conor McGregor will remain as the main event of the evening.
