Showtime Boxing Highlights: Porter KO’s Malignaggi; B-Hop knocks down Shumenov

Golden Boy Promotions brought its stacked ‘History at the Capital’ card to The DC Armory on Saturday night and it lived up to expectations. In the main event of the evening, timeless wonder Bernard Hopkins successfully unify his IBF Light Heavyweight title with Kazakhstan’s Beibut Shumenov’s WBA Super and IBA Light Heavyweight titles. At the ripe young age of 49, Hopkins would become the oldest fighter to unify world titles – a truly historic feat in the nation’s capital.

The judges would award Hopkins a split decision (113-114, 116-111 x 2) victory to run his record to 55-6-2. Judge Gustavo Padilla’s scorecard that read in favor of Shumenov was mind-boggling to say that least. Unfortunately, it certainly wasn’t the first and definitely won’t be the last time this happens in boxing. Fortunately, the right man won in the end.

In the co-main event of the evening, Shawn Porter put his IBF Welterweight title on the line against Brooklyn’s Magic Man, Paulie Malignaggi. Following his UD victory over Devon Alexander at Barclays last December with this brutal finish of Maliganggi puts Porter in a very comfortable spot right now in his career. It’ll be interesting to see who the 24-0-1 Porter gets next.

Also on the card, WBO Middleweight Champion Peter Quillin would use Lukas Konecny for target practice, key word being practice. This wasn’t exactly a fight to write home to mom about. All in all it was a great card that sets up some interesting match ups for what should be another summer to remember in the world of Boxing.
