Top 5 SummerSlam 2016 Moments

Summer is officially coming to an end. Students are returning to school, families are planning their last vacation of the season, and SummerSlam’s visit to Brooklyn ended as soon as it began. It feels like we were just trying on swimsuits, lathering our skin with sunscreen, and matches were being added to the hottest pay-per-view of the summer. Before the Fall season is upon us and the WWE Universe begins to focus their attention on the upcoming pay-per-view Backlash, let’s reflect on what I consider to be my five favorite moments from last night’s SummerSlam.

#5 – Walking the Walk

Some of SummerSlam’s most entertaining moments involved fancy footwork that occurred in some of last night’s matches. We witnessed Charlotte’s attempt at a Razor’s Edge which was quickly countered with a Hurricanrana by Sasha Banks and two amazing RKOs out of nowhere on Brock Lesnar. Some of the best moves that took place in or around the ring were strictly entertaining rather than strictly business. Did you witness Kevin Owens’ hysterical mocking of Enzo Amore’s backwards footwork on the apron of the ring? Or Dean Ambrose’s over exaggerated impression of Dolph Ziggler setting up for the Superkick? These imitations brought humor to their prospective matches and the pay-per-view as a whole, showing that even the serious of competitors can have a little fun.

#4 – Talking the Talk

Aside from the amusing jabs we observed in #5, now it’s time to talk about the equally amazing gabs. Certified G and Bonafide Stud Enzo Amore kicked off the show spitting something incredible on the microphone. Does that really surprise anyone though? He paid homage to New York, to The Notorious B.I.G, and to my man Frank Sinatra. He even had the WWE Universe rapping some of the first versus of Biggie Smalls’ “Juicy”. Tag Team Champions Xavier Woods and Kofi Kingston kept up the delightful dialogue while they were backstage with John Stewart and the Commissioners and General Managers of both Monday Night Raw and Smackdown Live. To turn around the hostile tension filling the room, The New Day shared their “Powers of Positivity”, or as Kingston and Woods also referenced it, “P-O-P, holding it down!” To some, this may be stupid. To me, I found it be hilarious and incredibly amusing. It’s the little things, right?

#3 – The Return of the Beauty and the Big E

SummerSlam featured the return of two of its beloved Superstars. Big E surprised the WWE Universe by charging in on the Tag Team Championship match and attacked Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson alongside his brothers of The New Day. Although Gallows won by disqualification, the titles stayed with The New Day. With a fully recuperated Big E, I have a feeling seeking his revenge against Gallows and Anderson will span over the next few weeks.

As happy as the WWE Universe was to see Big E, they were absolutely thrilled to see Nikki Bella! I know I was! Nikki returned to SummerSlam in place of Eva Marie in a Six Woman Tag Team Match. She debuted her new maneuver in place of The Rack Attack (the name of this new maneuver is unknown at this time) and picked up the victory for her team which consisted of Natalya and Alexa Bliss. You could never tell she was out for 10 months with a career-threatening neck injury as she wrestled with such grace and such agility. I look forward to seeing Nikki continue the Women’s Evolution on Smackdown Live. Welcome back!

#2 – One Phenomenal Match

The WWE Universe finally got the dream match of a lifetime: AJ Styles vs John Cena. Sure, we’ve seen these two meet up in the squared circle on numerous occasions within the last few months, but not like this. There was no Club ringside, no excuses, no interference, just AJ Styles and John Cena in classic singles action. It truly showcased their styles, their tenacity, and their talent with AJ Styles picking up the win and picking up it up clean. Emotions filled both Styles and Cena after this incredible match ended; AJ was filled with pride while John was distraught. He took the armband off, kissed it, and placed in the center of the ring before leaving. Does this mark the end of an era for John Cena or possibly the end of a tremendous career? Only time will tell.

#1 – The history-making matches you couldn’t see anywhere else

If one thing comes to mind about last night’s SummerSlam pay-per-view, it was the historical matches we witnessed right before our eyes. After training together in OVW and never coming face to face in the ring for 15 years, Brock Lesnar and Randy Orton finally met in the ring for singles action. It was a brutal match which resulted in a TKO and a gash in Randy’s head that needed multiple stitches. Then we had the first ever WWE Universal Championship match between Seth Rollins and Finn Balor. Finn Balor sustained a shoulder injury during the match but you couldn’t tell by how hard he wrestled his heart out. That enormous heart led to his victory and making history within WWE; Finn Balor is the first WWE Superstar to win an inaugural WWE Championship on a pay-per-view debut. It was surely a sight to see and one that will be a moment in WWE history everyone will talk about for years and years to come.

These were just some of the excellent, exciting and entertaining moments that took place at SummerSlam. If you happened to miss them, or the pay-per-view itself, lucky for us it’s available to watch on the WWE Network. There, you’ll be able to catch my top five favorite moments and even discover your own.
