UFC 176 Update: Aldo injury means no ‘Money’ rematch

UFC featherweight #1 contender Chad ‘Money’ Mendes will have to wait a little longer to get his hands Jose Aldo once again. Aldo was forced to withdraw from the UFC 176 title bout due to an undisclosed injury as reported by Ariel Helwani on FOX Sports 1’s UFC Tonight.
The two first met back at UFC 142 in Brazil in a main event title fight that would see Aldo serve Mendes his first defeat. The picture perfect KO via a well-time knee to the jaw would end the fight with just one second left in the opening stanza. Aldo would have his B.J. Penn moment of sorts when he left the cage to celebrate with the Rio’s finest.
Mendes earned his first shot at Aldo coming in with four straight unanimous decision victories to his credit. After the Aldo loss, Mendes reeled off four consecutive KO/TKO victories, followed by UD win over Nik Lentz to earn another shot at the champ.
Unfortunately for Mendes, a shot at bringing home another strap to Team Alpha Male this summer is no longer a reality. Whether or not he will remain on the promotion August 2nd visit to the Staples Center for UFC 176 remains to be seen.
