UFC 205: Frankie Edgar vs. Jeremy Stephens preview

Published

on

UFC 205 is so stacked that former 3-time defending lightweight champion Frankie Edgar (20-5-1) versus 6-time UFC bonus collector Jeremy Stephens (25-12) will serve as the headliner for the preliminary portion of this historic card.

The last time we saw Frankie Edgar was back at UFC 200 where he made his second attempt at procuring UFC featherweight gold. The Toms River, New Jersey native would fall short for a second time to former 7-time defending champ Jose Aldo via unanimous decision. Unfortunately for Edgar, this would be his 4th consecutive title defeat and would not only take him out of the Conor McGregor sweepstakes, it’d force him down to the 7th spot on a card that he would’ve headlined had he beaten Aldo on July 9th in Las Vegas.

Jeremy Stephens, who the fook is that guy?

Good question. The 23-fight UFC vet headlined his first UFC card back when McGregor was a 20-year-old with a 3-1 record who had yet to fight outside of his hometown. He has that one-hitter quitter that you simply cannot teach, as evidenced by his 16 KO/TKO finishes, and he holds victories over 2 former UFC champions.

Hey, don’t get me wrong, McGregor’s quip was probably the most hilarious moment of the UFC 205 pre-fight presser (I know my neighbors we’re probably wondering what the hell was so funny on a random Tuesday night) but I simply have to remind you that this young Iowanian is not someone you’re going to find funny when he’s standing right in front of you with his hands wrapped.

I’d be doing everyone who got this far into this article a disservice by not giving you my prediction for this 3 round affair. I’m more than willing to throw some hard earned dollars down on Jeremy Stephens as a +255 underdog against the -335 favorite in Frankie Edgar. Stephens finishes Edgar inside the distance to help cement himself as a future featherweight title contender.
