The UFC Women’s Featherweight Championship drama continues.
After former champ Germaine de Randamie was stripped of the title because she wasn’t willing to defend it against the only other girl in the division at the time, Cris ‘Cyborg’ Justino (17-1), a fight between Cyborg and Invicta FC Featherweight Queen Megan Anderson (8-2) was booked for UFC 214 next month in Anaheim. This was a fight that Anderson had been lobbying for on social media for quite some time. Unfortunately, due to personal issues, she will not be able to realize her dream just yet.
Here’s what Anderson had to say via social media:
I have been wanting this fight for a long time and finally got the opportunity to showcase my skills on the big stage but unfortunately due to some pressing personal issues that are out of my control, it is not to be right now.
I am no stranger to struggle and this is the biggest struggle I have faced yet, but like I always do, I will come back stronger and better than before and I will be coming for Cris, the Title and becoming the face of the UFC 145lb division.
I am determined and resolved to make history and shock the world. I’m coming for whoever has that belt.
Filling in for Anderson will be none other than current Invicta 135 lbs champion Tonya Evinger (19-6). ‘Triple Threat’ has been on an absolute tear of late sporting a record of 10-0 with 1 No Contest over her last 11 bouts. While Evinger has competed at a catchweight of 140 lbs against Gina Carano and Julie Kedzie in the past, this will be the first time she has competed at 145 lbs. Tonya was scheduled to replace Anderson in the main event of Invicta FC 24 on July 15th against the undefeated Helena Kolesnyk. She will now replace Anderson again for a bigger paycheck and a bigger opportunity on July 29th.
We of course wish Anderson the best with her current issues and look forward to seeing her return when the time is right.
