Report: UFC looking at Daniel Cormier vs Derrick Lewis for UFC 230 main event

Fresh off the biggest comeback KO win of the year inside of the Octagon, Derrick Lewis (21-5) may have just earned himself a shot at greatness next month inside of the world-famous Madison Square Garden.
According to Brett Okamoto of ESPN, the UFC is entertaining the idea of booking Daniel Cormier (21-1) to defend his Heavyweight strap against Lewis in the main event of UFC 230. That event goes down on November 3rd inside of MSG.
In a fight that saw him get outstruck by Russian Heavyweight Alexander Volkov 133-40, Lewis landed a vicious counter right to drop his opponent with just seconds remaining on the clock. He’d finish Volkov off with some ground and pound to seal the deal.
Combine that, a showing that would earn him his third performance of the night bonus, with his unforgettable post-fight interview on the biggest UFC PPV in history and you have your self a bona-fide new UFC star. This would be quite the turnaround for Lewis with the UFC looking to strike while the iron is hot.
UFC 230 is currently without an official headliner with tickets already on sale for the event. A women’s flyweight tilt between Valentina Shevchenko and Sijara Eubanks was rumored for the card but may not be booked due to the intense backlash that it was immediately met with from fans of the sport. Lightweights Dustin Poirier and Nate Diaz have lobbied for their fight to be moved into the main event slot for a 165 lbs title that currently does not exist — this has been shot down on numerous occasions by UFC President Dana White.
A heavyweight title tilt between Cormier and former UFC champion/WWE Superstar Brock Lesnar is still expected to take place early next year. With 9 wins in his last 10 contests and the ability to end anyone’s night with one punch, you can never count someone with the heart of Lewis out, even if it is against the 2-division champ. Could Lewis spoil Cormier’s multi-million dollar date with Lesnar if this fight is indeed booked? We may just be in the midst of a Cinderella “Black Beast” story for the ages folks. Stay tuned.
