UFC on FOX 16 ‘Tate vs. Eye’ fight preview and prediction

When former Strikeforce women’s bantamweight champion and 2-time UFC #1 contender Miesha Tate (16-5) meets Jessica ‘Evil’ Eye (11-2) in the co-main event of UFC on FOX 16 in Chicago tonight, the very idea of time will cease to exist for long time WMMA hardcore fans.

Like many fans of this beautiful sport, I’ve been lucky enough to see both of these women fight live on multiple occasions. When it comes to Tate, we are looking at the 2nd most well known female mixed martial artist in the world today. The 5-fight UFC vet holds just that, 5 UFC fights over Cris ‘Cyborg’, who now comes in at a distant third when it comes to the most well know women in MMA. Gina Carano, who has been retired for about 6 years now, comes in at 4th place, a harsh reminder of just how small our sport is when it comes to the mainstream media.

Heading into tonight, no one really knows who Tate’s opponent,  Jessica Eye, is. I’m here to help inform you that she’s a fighter who has built her career on violence; she took out the only Bellator women’s champion in history, Zoila Frausto Gurgel, in just 58-seconds and she’s also responsible for exploding Leslie Smith’s ear in her last contest. Also, maybe it was just me, but when I first saw Eye fight in the flesh in  Cleveland at Bellator 66, I came back home telling everyone who would listen that this girl throws hand harder than any woman at 135 lbs – her fists are loud!

Earlier this year, 6-time defending women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey announced that Tate and Eye would clash in a title eliminator bout to decide who would challenge the champ, assuming that she’ll beat Bethe Correia next Saturday night in Rio.

After coming up short in her first two UFC bouts, Tate will enter the cage tonight on the strength of a 3-fight win streak. The former Strikeforce champ has been known to start slow, but she’s also notorious for finishing strong. Against a hungry and just as experienced fighter in Eye, she may want to flip the script.

If you’re going to point a gun to my head and ask me which of these two competitors will get her hand raised after it’s all said and done I’ll tell you the following – I would not bet my house on it and I certainly would not swear on any of my loved one’s graves. If I were a “betting man,” I’d certainly take the underdog, Jessica Eye (+165) over the favorite Miesha Tate (-190) on this particular night.

‘Eye Believe’ that the Ohioan will take the fight to Tate early on, forcing her to succumb to her uncontrollable spark.

Prediction: Jessica Eye defeats Miesha Tate via TKO – Round 2, 2:14
